Let's talk about GRIT. Grit is the top characteristic I look for in a potential business partner or hire. Grit will get you farther than natural talent any day.
What is grit? Grit means mental courage. Grit means persistent perseverance. Grit is passion. Grit means long-haul commitment over years, not weeks or months.
Most people can be mentally courageous. Many can persevere for a short period of time. People are often passionate. What they lack is commitment to be persistent for the long haul. It takes YEARS for true success to be earned. You must commit and stay mentally strong for years.
Angela Duckworth, an expert on grit, says "grit is sticking with your future day in, day out and not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years.”
So simple and so powerful.
Grit grows.
You may be thinking: well how the hell do I measure or "get" grit? My top piece of advice for anyone looking to grow their grit is to play like an underdog daily, weekly, and monthly for years. I have always played like the underdog and will continue that practice. Trust me when I say that it is so damn fun and rewarding to watch an underdog win. A person with true grit also understands that there is no true finish line – you keep striving to get better both personally and professionally.
I encourage you to think of someone you know personally who has grit and talk to them. Ask them questions, learn about their grit, and go grow yours!
